The Staffordshire town of Burntwood lies 4 miles west of the city of Lichfield and once held its own races over a 2 year period in the 19th century on a course within walking distance of the town. The earliest meeting on Wednesday 14th October 1835 was deemed to be sufficiently important to be included in Baily’s Racing Register. At the meeting staged on Wednesday 16th October 1839 the last race, the Hack Stakes, was won by Zinganee with the famous jockey Sam Chiffney riding Mischief into third place. Race entries were made at The Star Inn Hotel and in the evening the Steward’s Ordinary was served at the same venue. |
